Crawford was born in Mansfield Cottage, New Cumnock. It does look like Crawford was named after her father Hugh’s employer William Campbell’s (from Dalhanna across the road) wife Margaret Crawford Young, and not a family name at all. Crawford was listed on her marriage certificate as an Agricultural Servant from Hurlford, when at the age of 22 years, she married James McCrorie.

On the 1851 Census for New Cumnock District 608 No 1 Page 58 Mansfield.

Father Hugh Wilson has already died and Elizabeth is with daughter Christian Roxburgh on the 1851 Census (Above) so these following children were home alone.

Thomas Wilson Son Unmarried Age 17 General Labourer Born New Cumnock. Crawford Wilson Daughter Unmarried Age 14 Born New Cumnock. (These next two are family members but not known who’s children) Hugh Wilson Son Unmarried Age 4 Born Auchinleck. (I suspect this should have stated Grandson.) Elizabeth Wilson Grand/Daughter Age 4 Born Auchinleck.

On the 1861 Census for Riccarton at 42 Cadgers Road:

James McCrorie Head Marr Age 28 Coal Miner Born Kirkconnel, Dumfries. Crawford Wife Marr Age 24 Born New Cumnock, Ayr. Thomas Son Age 1 Born Riccarton, Ayr. Hugh ? Boarder Age 21 Coal Pit Labourer born New Cumnock, Ayr. Margaret W? Marr Age 32 General Servant born New Cumnock, Ayr. Hugh W? Boarder Age 5 Months Born Riccarton, Ayr.

Note 2:

Mary and James decided to immigrate to New Zealand between 1861/64 (Shipping Record not found) to make their fortune on the Gold Fields that had just opened up in Dunedin New Zealand. James was already a Coal Miner, so possibly, they felt he had a good chance of getting work, in one of the mines, if they didn't find gold on their own. Crawford was known to be a hard worker and loving mother, and she died at the age of 73 years Death Entry No 1349. She made out her Will a month earlier on the 18th May 1909 in Abbotsford, Otago. She left 50 pounds each to her grand children and the rest to be divided equally between her sons John and Hugh and daughters Elizabeth Bennett and Mary McQuarrie, and her son in law Archibald Bennett. She was most likely buried with James in Dunedin.
